PLANTS AND PEOPLE SERIES — Reagan Wytsalucy joins us to talk about her work with Indigenous communities to increase the availability of traditional crops – especially peaches – for original uses. Reagan’s work is one of the stories (The Peach Collector) included in Amy Stewart’s newest book The Tree Collectors – Tales of Arboreal Obsession (2024).

Reagan Wytsalucy (Navajo Nation) is director of the San Juan County USU Extension Office in Utah and a tenured Associate Professor of Agriculture at Utah State University. She has a bachelor’s (2016) and master’s (2019) degree in Plant Sciences from USU. She is internationally known and a leading expert in Southwestern Tribal food systems and is widely featured for her work locating and preserving the Southwest peaches grown by tribal nations in the Southwest. In addition to Reagan’s professional activities, her first responsibility is being a single mother of 3 small children. She leads with the intent to raise them with the foundation to strengthen their love for self, our creator, family, the environment, all living creatures, and community.
