March 2023
Composting is coming to SFBG! Thanks to winning a RAID (Recycling And Illegal Dumping) grant from the New Mexico Environment Department, we (along with 6 other sites across New Mexico) will soon be building an on-site, three bin composting station. We hope to be able to compost the majority of our site-generated organic debris such as trimmings from spring clean-ups, with an eye to expanding our station as a future Community Composting site.
In an exciting first step, we got our new electric chipper-shredder up and running in early March, thanks to a couple of focused Volunteer Gardeners. We can now break down our larger debris into smaller, compostable-sized shreddings for more efficient turnover.
We are looking for a dedicated crew of Volunteer Composters who will be able to keep our station running smoothly. The work will include chipping garden debris with the new machine and building, turning, watering, and otherwise maintaining the compost in the bins. We envision this as a weekly project through May (spring clean-up season), probably every other week thereafter. Meetings will be after hours either Wednesdays or Thursdays so we can run the chipper while there are not visitors in the Garden. Interested in this volunteer opportunity or becoming volunteer?
