The Garden’s first Executive Director, Linda Milbourn, was a pivotal leader who embodied the spirit of lifelong education in pursuit of goals and dreams. Her vision to build a botanical garden is embodied in our Garden, where every year thousands of people connect to nature and plants in an impactful way.
Today educational opportunities in Linda’s name are supporting the next generation of environmental leaders.
College Internship
Santa Fe Botanical Garden created the Linda Milbourn College Internship in 2021 to promote in-depth knowledge of public garden management, hands-on horticulture, landscape design, sustainability and community partnership to a college level student or recent college graduate.
- The 2021 recipient, Francesca Galliano, forged new connections to local initiatives and networks resulting in SFBG joining the New Mexico Healthy Soil Working Group and becoming an active member of a statewide ‘Compost Coalition’ working towards installing a compost system and offering educational programs. She also joined SFBG staff as communications coordinator in April 2022.
- The 2022 recipient, Nohemi Garcia, worked diligently in the Garden and raised awareness throughout the Santa Fe community through outreach at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, a new virtual tour, and interactive and educational engagement via social media (try one of her plant quizzes on Instagram!).
Applications for next summer’s internship will open in January 2023 and all details are available on our website.
National Graduate Fellowship
The American Public Gardens Association has established the Linda Milbourn Fellowship in Landscape Architecture, a three-year Fellowship Award in honor of Linda Milbourn to enable graduate students of Landscape Architecture to discover the impact their own vision can have on public gardens and future generations of visitors.
At the 2022 Annual Conference, the first recipient, Jessica Fegley, from Penn State University was recognized for her green stormwater infrastructure concept plan at Winterthur.
Applications are now open for the next American Public Gardens Association Linda S. Milbourn Fellowship in Landscape Architecture and the deadline is extended to October 31, 2022. Visit this website for more information.
