Santa Fe Botanical Garden (SFBG) is honored to receive a grant from the Native Plant Society of New Mexico (NPSNM) to support the publication of an educational booklet on New Mexico’s grasslands. This resource will explore the historical significance of grasslands, their current state, and their critical role in climate change mitigation.

Despite their importance, grasslands often go unnoticed for the critical role they play in supporting biodiversity, soil health, and climate resilience. In New Mexico, these ecosystems have faced significant challenges, from habitat loss to the impacts of climate change, putting native species and ecological balance at risk. This booklet aims to make grassland conservation more accessible by bridging the gap between scientific research and everyday action. It will highlight the importance of restoring and managing these landscapes sustainably—supporting wildlife, improving soil health, and helping to capture carbon. By encouraging the planting and care of native grasses, the booklet will offer practical guidance for creating healthier habitats, supporting pollinators, and fostering stronger connections between people and the land. Ultimately, it’s about empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and tools to take part in conservation efforts that benefit both nature and future generations.

Led by SFBG’s Director of Science and Conservation, Cristina Salvador, this project brings together a dedicated team of staff, subject matter experts, and volunteers. With expert reviews and rigorous scientific content, the booklet will serve as a valuable resource for residents, landowners, educators, and conservation advocates.

This project is made possible through the Jack & Martha Carter Conservation Fund, which allows NPSNM to support conservation, restoration, research, and education initiatives that align with its mission. Through this dedicated fund, NPSNM helps protect fragile habitats, advance scientific knowledge, and inspire future generations to appreciate and care for native plants. The generosity of NPSNM members and donors has enabled the organization to fund a variety of projects, including support for regional herbaria that preserve the botanical history of the Southwest.

We are deeply grateful for NPSNM’s support and look forward to sharing this important resource with the community. Stay tuned for updates on its publication!
