In this engaging presentation\, co-authors Lauren and Bryan explore a fresh approach to creating beautiful\, resilient landscapes inspired by the Interior West. \nTogether\, they will share practical perspectives on designing with native plants\, encouraging gardeners to move beyond rigid design principles and instead develop ways of seeing that foster originality\, atmosphere\, and a strong sense of place. Along the way\, they’ll expand the native plant palette with outstanding but underused species from the Rocky Mountains\, Great Plains\, Great Basin\, and Southwest\, while introducing surprising native plants that many gardeners would never expect to find in the region’s wild landscapes. \nWhether you’re just beginning to garden with native plants or looking to deepen your knowledge\, you’ll leave with new ideas\, fresh inspiration\, and a broader appreciation for the remarkable diversity and design potential of the Interior West’s native flora. \nAbout the Presenters: \nLauren Springer \nLauren received the national 2025 American Horticultural Society Landscape Design award. Her work is featured regularly by the national and international press\, in books\, and on television. Of her six books the newest\, coauthored with Bryan Fischer\, is The Rocky Mountain Native Plant Primer from Timber Press. Lauren continues to introduce many plants to the regional trade\, including this year’s Plant Select selection Epilobium canum UnforgettableTM and next year’s Muhlenbergia rigens Sure ThingTM. She has designed public garden spaces at Denver Botanic Gardens\, Chatfield Farms\, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden\, and at the Gardens on Spring Creek. \n  \nBryan Fischer \nBryan is the Horticulture Manager for the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC) in Loveland\, Colorado. Recruited to pioneer the role and grow HPEC’s horticulture program\, Bryan oversees the care and development of the Center’s gardens and several associated landscapes across Northern Colorado. Complementing this work\, Bryan breeds native plants to maximize their beauty and durability in gardens while preserving their ecological values. In 2025\, he received the Plant Select® Individual Partner Award in recognition of his contributions to advancing sustainable horticulture. SUMMARY:Autumnal Nature Sketching at Santa Fe Botanical Garden with Georgia O'Keeffe Museum
DESCRIPTION:Registration required through Georgia O’Keeffe website.\n\nJoin the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum at Santa Fe Botanical Gardens for a relaxing session to welcome the autumn season into your sketchbook. This class will take place at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden’s outdoor classroom\, where GOKM teaching artist Sudeshna Sengupta will begin with an interactive demonstration of how to capture trees\, branches\, and leaves using professional nature-sketching tools\, such as\, watercolor pencils\, graphite pencils\, brush pens\, and more. After receiving guidance in a variety of styles and techniques\, participants will create their own observational nature sketches inspired by their surroundings with plenty of opportunity for more individual guidance from the instructor. Please email contact@gokm.org or call 505.946.1000 for assistance with event registration. \n\n\nAbout the instructor:\n\nSudeshna Sengupta’s career as a teaching artist spans multiple decades\, continents\, and cultures that inform her pedagogy for decolonizing studio art. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985 from Visva-Bharati University\, founded by the first non-European Nobel Laureate (1913) and humanist poet Rabindranath Tagore. \nAfter teaching art and design at the college level in New Delhi\, Seattle\, and California\, she taught at New Mexico State University-Alamogordo\, where she established its first intaglio printmaking studio in 1995. Besides the O’Keeffe Museum\, Sengupta teaches credit courses with the School of Art & Design of the Santa Fe Community College. \nHer etchings and lithographs from the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi have been featured in a landmark exhibition on Women Printmakers of India at the NGMA-New Delhi in India. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the New Mexico chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society. \n*Registration at the door only\, cash or checks preferred.  \nFor more information contact: drarlek@yahoo.com  \n\n\nBronckaers comes to Santa Fe thanks to Panyoti Kelaidis of Denver Botanic Garden\, as part of a U.S. tour\, speaking with NARGS chapters and other organizations around the country.  According to Kelaidis\, “Sven is perhaps the most astonishing plantsman (when it comes to vast knowledge of trees\, shrubs and herbaceous plants) I’ve ever known.”\n\nExploring Central China\nBased on the 2025 International Dendrology Society expedition through the provinces of Shaanxi and Hubei\, this talk explores one of the richest floras I have ever encountered. During this amazing journey\, we visited a wide range of habitats and discovered an extraordinary diversity of rare plants in some of China’s most botanically rich mountain landscapes. Although the main focus of the expedition was woody plants\, I couldn’t resist looking at the entire flora and fauna\, from trees and shrubs to ferns\, herbaceous plants\, and the many other fascinating organisms we encountered along the way. \nBiography\nSven Bronckaers has been passionate about plants and nature from a young age. His fascination began at the age of 12 when he joined the orchid association\, igniting a lifelong interest in rare and extraordinary flora. Based in Belgium\, a region with relatively limited plant diversity\, he finds joy in traveling to explore remarkable regions and their distinct vegetation. His private garden\, resembling a small arboretum\, features a diverse collection of unique trees\, shrubs\, woodland plants\, ferns\, and winter-hardy orchids.\nKnown for his broad botanical knowledge\, Sven excels at identifying plant species in their natural environments. Since 2016\, he has worked at the Bokrijk Arboretum\, one of Belgium’s largest plant collections.
