SUMMARY:Exploring Central China" by Sven Bronckaers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the New Mexico chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society. \n*Registration at the door only\, cash or checks preferred. \nFor more information contact: drarlek@yahoo.com  \n\n\nBronckaers comes to Santa Fe thanks to Panyoti Kelaidis of Denver Botanic Garden\, as part of a U.S. tour\, speaking with NARGS chapters and other organizations around the country.  According to Kelaidis\, “Sven is perhaps the most astonishing plantsman (when it comes to vast knowledge of trees\, shrubs and herbaceous plants) I’ve ever known.”\n\nExploring Central China\nBased on the 2025 International Dendrology Society expedition through the provinces of Shaanxi and Hubei\, this talk explores one of the richest floras I have ever encountered. During this amazing journey\, we visited a wide range of habitats and discovered an extraordinary diversity of rare plants in some of China’s most botanically rich mountain landscapes. Although the main focus of the expedition was woody plants\, I couldn’t resist looking at the entire flora and fauna\, from trees and shrubs to ferns\, herbaceous plants\, and the many other fascinating organisms we encountered along the way. \nBiography\nSven Bronckaers has been passionate about plants and nature from a young age. His fascination began at the age of 12 when he joined the orchid association\, igniting a lifelong interest in rare and extraordinary flora. Based in Belgium\, a region with relatively limited plant diversity\, he finds joy in traveling to explore remarkable regions and their distinct vegetation. His private garden\, resembling a small arboretum\, features a diverse collection of unique trees\, shrubs\, woodland plants\, ferns\, and winter-hardy orchids.\nKnown for his broad botanical knowledge\, Sven excels at identifying plant species in their natural environments. Since 2016\, he has worked at the Bokrijk Arboretum\, one of Belgium’s largest plant collections. This role provides him with daily opportunities to engage with exceptional plants\, making it a dream come true for such a passionate plant enthusiast.\n\nDate and Time: \n\n\nThursday\, October 15\, 2026\n10:30am – 12:00 pm\n\nLocation: \n\nStewart L. Udall Center for Museum Resources\, 2nd floor conference room\, 725 Camino Lejo\, Santa Fe\, 87505\n\nPricing: \n\nNM NARGS Members: $28\nSFBG Members: $28\nNot-Yet-Members: $35

SUMMARY:Chasing the Melting Snow: Conserving Alpines in a Short Alpine Summer with Mike Kintgen
DESCRIPTION:Advance Registration Recommended \nJoin us for Mike Kintgen’s presentation that will cover modern day alpine plant conservation in both the garden and the wild. Mike will touch on the North American Botanic Garden Strategy for Alpine Plant Conservation (“The Alpine Strategy”) and how it’s helping to guide alpine plant work across the US and Canada. Mike will take you deep into remote alpine areas to showcase the beauty of our native alpine flora and touch on the basics of how we go about conserving alpine plants through seed banking. The discussion will wrap up with a look at the Rock Alpine Garden at Denver Botanic Gardens where some of these collections are on display. \nphoto by Jen Toews \nAbout the presenter: \nMike Kintgen has been gardening since age 7 in both Steamboat Springs and the Denver metro area. Mike has lectured across North America\, in Europe and Argentina. Additionally\, he has written for a wide variety of journals and magazines. He has helped to author multiple books with Denver Botanic Gardens including Steppes and Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountain Region. \nHe is a member of numerous plant societies focusing on alpine\, rock gardens and western native plants. Mike helped author the North American Botanic Strategy for Alpine Plant Conservation with Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and DBG’s Research Department\, which was recently published in 2020. \nWhen not working at Denver Botanic Gardens he enjoys gardening at home and hiking and exploring plants in their native habitats.
